Telegram still requires a phone number to create an account, and every number is a separate account. What you can avoid is handing over your personal number. A temporary number receives the sign-up code for you, a public @username lets people reach you without knowing any number, and Telegram's privacy settings control who can see the number tied to your account.

Can you use Telegram without a phone number?
Short answer: no, not at sign-up. Telegram's own FAQ states that a phone number is needed to register. So "Telegram without a phone number" really means one of these things:
- Not exposing your personal number. This is what most people want. You still need a number to register, but it does not have to be the one on your SIM.
- Not showing your number to other people. Once you have an account, you can pick a username (the @name) and people can message you through it. Telegram says that if someone finds you by username and you reply, they will not know your number. Under Settings, Privacy and Security, Phone Number, you can also limit who sees it. By default it is only visible to people who have you in their contacts.
- An anonymous number from Telegram's own ecosystem. Telegram has an official route where numbers in the +888 range are sold through Fragment, a marketplace built on the TON blockchain, and used only to sign in to Telegram. It involves a crypto wallet and is a separate process from what this guide describes. We do not offer it. If you are comfortable with crypto wallets, it is worth knowing it exists.
- A private temporary number. A real number that receives one verification message for you. This is what we cover below.
None of these makes Telegram work with no number at all. What they do is keep your own number out of the picture.
How to register on Telegram with a private temporary number
The steps are the same on Android, iPhone, and the desktop app. Menu names may differ slightly between versions.
- Pick the service and a country. On the Telegram service page you can see which countries currently have numbers and what each costs in credits. Credits are shown before you order. Signing up is free, and credits are only spent when you request a number.
- Request a number. Confirm the order. The number is private to you for the length of the order, so nobody else will receive the code sent to it.
- Open Telegram and start sign-up. Install the app, tap Start Messaging, and choose the same country code as your number. Telegram will ask for the number.
- Enter the number exactly as shown. Paste it with the country code and without extra zeros. A wrong country code is a common reason for a code that never arrives.
- Tap Next and watch your order page. Telegram sends the code. When it arrives it appears in your account on the order page, normally within a minute or two.
- Type the code into Telegram. Then add your name and, if you want, a profile photo.
- Secure the account straight away. Set a username, turn on two-step verification (a cloud password), and do not log out of the device you registered on. The next section explains why.
If no code arrives, cancel the order and the credits return to your account balance. You only keep what you use.
The honest risk: the number is temporary and Telegram logs in with it
Telegram treats the phone number as your login. A temporary number is held for you only for a short while and may later be reassigned to someone else. That has consequences:
- If you are logged out of every device, you will need a code sent to that number to log back in. Once the number is gone, so is that route.
- When you are already logged in on a device, Telegram usually sends the code to the Telegram app there first instead of by SMS. That helps, but it is not a recovery plan.
To reduce the risk:
- Turn on two-step verification. In Telegram, go to Settings, Privacy and Security, Two-Step Verification, and set a password. Telegram's FAQ says that with it, you need both the code and the password to log in. Add a recovery email you control.
- Set a username so contacts can find you without the number.
- Keep your current session open. Do not use "log out" or terminate the session on the device you registered on.
- Change to a number you control if you plan to use the account long term. Telegram's FAQ says you can change your number and keep your contacts and messages. Do this while you are still logged in.
For a throwaway or short-term use, a temporary number is fine. For an account you care about, treat the temporary number as a starting point only.
Why the Telegram code doesn't arrive (and what to do)
1. The code went to Telegram, not SMS. If you are logged in anywhere else with that number, Telegram sends the code as a message inside the app on that session first. This is normal behavior. For a brand-new number there is no other session, so this applies mainly when the number already has an account. Check your other devices, or wait for the option to receive it by SMS.
2. The number is entered wrong. Check the country code and that there is no leading zero. Compare it with the number on your order page, character by character.
3. The number already has a Telegram account. Then Telegram treats your attempt as a login, not a sign-up, and the code goes to the account's existing sessions. Cancel and request a different number.
4. Too many attempts. Telegram limits how often a code can be requested for a number or from a device. If you see a message about too many attempts, stop. Wait before trying again instead of tapping resend repeatedly, because each tap can extend the wait.
5. Telegram won't accept the number. Sometimes a number is rejected or the SMS never gets sent. This varies by number and over time. Cancel the order, let the credits return, and request a number from another country.
6. It simply needs more time. SMS delivery can lag. Give the order its full window before cancelling. If the window ends with no code, the order times out and your credits return to your balance.

Which country should you pick
Availability is not the same everywhere. Some countries have plenty of numbers for Telegram at a given moment, others have few or none, and that changes. Prices are in credits and differ by country.
A practical way to choose:
- Open the Telegram service page and look at the countries listed, with their stock and credit price.
- Pick a country that currently shows availability. A low credit price helps if you expect to try more than one.
- If a number does not work, cancel it and move to a different country instead of reordering the same one.
